Redefining Leadership: Girls Action Foundation’s Approaches to Supporting Young Women from Racialized Communities

This tool was developed by the Girls Action Foundation.

HERE'S HOW THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE THIS TOOLKIT:
The Redefining Leadership Guide provides an in-depth look at the importance of redefining leadership to specifically support girls and young women from racialized communities in Canada.

The purpose of the Guide is to share the tips and practices identified by girls’ programmers and practitioners for activities, projects, and programs that have worked successfully and created positive outcomes when taking into consideration the needs of girls and young women from racialized communities.

The Redefining Leadership Guide is intended for girls’ programmers, facilitators, educators, counselors, youth workers, and health practitioners who are committed to supporting the leadership of girls and young women from racialized groups. Our hope is to share practices, insights, and stories across networks of practitioners and key stakeholders in order to encourage future partnerships, and bridge the gap between partners and organizations from different social sectors.

Part One of this guide looks at the importance of fostering leadership development for girls and young women from racialized communities from the viewpoint of girls’ programmers. It addresses the barriers and issues related to leadership, why it is important for girls and young women from racialized communities to become leaders, and identifies defining moments in leadership development. Part Two is a compilation of tips and promising practices for leadership development based on Girls Action work over the last 16 years designing programs with its many partners. The tips include program conception through to completion.

This Guide includes a compilation of quotes by practitioners, teachers, community workers, girls’ programmers, (youth) facilitators, and girl participants. It is important to note that some of these quotes have been contextualized for the purpose of the guide.
